how do you do the thing with the shading having the lighter brown on the darker shadow?

I tried something new here so it was a bit of experimentation. I laid down my flat colors first, clipped the shadow layer above that, then above the shadow layer I used a slightly lighter shade (between the flat base and the shadow color) and colored around the edge of the shadow. Then I would blend it all in a bit.
